Size guides

Most returns come down to one measurement taken wrongly. Take these with a cloth tape, write them down, and send them to us before you order.

Wheelchairs and commodes

Two measurements decide whether a chair works: the seat width for the person, and the folded width for your home.

  • Seat width — measure the person sitting down, across the widest point of the hips, then add 2 cm. Do not measure the old chair.
  • Folded width — measure the narrowest doorway the chair has to pass, usually the bathroom. The folded width must be at least 2 cm less.
  • Seat height — measure from the back of the knee to the floor with shoes on. The footplate should sit 5 cm off the ground.
  • Weight capacity — use the person’s actual weight, not an estimate. Exceeding it voids the frame warranty.

Adult diapers and pull-ups

Order by waist measurement, not by S/M/L. The letters mean different things from one maker to the next.

  • Measure around the waist at the level of the navel, lying down if the person is bedridden.
  • If you fall between two sizes, take the smaller one. A diaper that is too large leaks at the leg.
  • Hip measurement matters more than waist for someone who is bedridden — send us both.

Blood pressure cuffs

A cuff that is too small reads high. This is the single most common reason a home reading disagrees with the clinic.

  • Measure around the bare upper arm, midway between the shoulder and the elbow.
  • Our standard Omron cuff fits 22 – 42 cm, which covers most adults.
  • Above 42 cm, ask for the large cuff — we stock it separately.

Lumbar belts and braces

  • Measure around the waist at the navel, over a thin layer of clothing, not at the trouser line.
  • Between two sizes, take the larger. A belt that is too tight is not worn.

Walkers, crutches and sticks

  • Stand upright in shoes with the arms hanging loose. The handle should sit level with the crease of the wrist.
  • For underarm crutches, leave two fingers’ width between the pad and the armpit. The weight goes through the hands, not the armpit.

Still not sure

Send the measurements to 0300 555 0100 with a photo of the room or doorway if it is a wheelchair or a bed. We check the fit before dispatch, every time.

Still not sure?

Send us the measurement, a photo, or just describe the situation. We answer during shop hours and usually well after.
